Paravi Duwa Temple (පරවි දූව විහාරය මාතර)

Matara Paravi Dupatha is a popular cultural and historical landmark in the southern part of Sri Lanka, specifically in the Matara district. Known for its association with the local traditions, legends, and religious significance, Paravi Dupatha is a notable point of interest for both locals and visitors.

Historical and Cultural Significance:

"Paravi Dupatha" translates to "The Bird’s Island" in Sinhala, and it is a small island located off the coast of Matara, in the Indian Ocean. The island's name is derived from its shape and the abundance of birdlife that was once a characteristic feature of the area. Historically, it is believed to have been a center of spiritual importance.

The island is also associated with the famous Paravi Dupatha Perahera, a local festival. This annual religious procession is held in honor of the temple and the deity it is dedicated to. The event features traditional rituals, vibrant dances, drumming, and processions of ornately decorated elephants, which are a significant aspect of the island’s cultural identity.
