Weherahena Temple, also known as Weherahena Poorwarama Raja Maha Viharaya, is a striking Buddhist temple located in Matara, Sri Lanka. This temple is renowned for its impressive Buddha statue, intricate underground tunnel paintings, and unique history, making it a prominent attraction in the southern part of the country. Here’s what makes Weherahena Temple such a remarkable site:

1. The Massive Buddha Statue

  • The centerpiece of Weherahena Temple is a giant seated Buddha statue, which stands at around 39 meters (130 feet) high. This statue is one of the largest Buddha statues in Sri Lanka and is visible from a great distance. It represents the Dhyana Mudra, the gesture of meditation, symbolizing peace and tranquility.
  • This enormous statue is built over a two-story structure, with steps that allow visitors to get a closer view of the Buddha’s face and other parts of the statue.

2. The Underground Tunnel with Painted Murals

  • One of the most unique features of Weherahena Temple is the underground tunnel adorned with colorful murals that depict the Jataka tales—stories from the past lives of Buddha.
  • This tunnel stretches about 600 feet in length, with its walls fully covered in intricate paintings. These murals illustrate various events in the life of the Buddha, as well as scenes from Sri Lankan Buddhist history, showcasing the skill and artistry of the local craftsmen.
  • Walking through this tunnel offers a unique visual journey through Buddhist teachings and is meant to invoke a sense of reflection and reverence.

3. Historical Background

  • Weherahena Temple was founded in the early 20th century by Ven. Parawahera Rewatha Thero, a Buddhist monk who aimed to create a place where the stories and teachings of Buddhism could be visually represented.
  • Initially, the temple was just a small cave shrine, but over decades, it was expanded with the help of donations from locals and international supporters. The massive Buddha statue and the underground tunnel were later added, transforming the temple into a prominent pilgrimage site.
